MB51 - The Heart of SAP Material Module

Welcome back! In this blog I'll brief you about MB51 which feel I as the heart of the material module in SAP. Basically for every movement of material in the factory it should be entered in SAP as per the suitable material movement which are as under:

1. Movement Type 101 & 102

If any material is given with the movement type 101, it indicates receipt of material to the factory either on account of purchase or on account of stock transfer from other factory (GRN preparation). Movement type 102 indicates reversal entry of movement type 101.

2. Movement Type 201 & 202

If any material is given with the movement 201, it indicates direct consumption of material from stores department to the respective user department. Such movement is used in case of indirect materials and consumables like spares, diesel to generator etc.

3. Movement Type 261 & 262

Movement type 261 indicates consumption of materials from production department. i.e, material issued to production. Movement type 262 indicates reversal of movement type 261.

4. Movement Type 311

Movement type 311 indicates internal movement of material from one storage location to another storage location. It merely indicates physical movement of goods from one storage location to another but it is not for consumption. Say, on request of raw material by the production department then the stores department transfers such material in SAP from stores storage location to shop floor ( Storage location under the control of Production Department).

5. Movement Type 321

Movement type 321 will be given by Quality department in SAP to make available such stock for consumption by the production department. On raising of GRN by stores department through movement type 101 in SAP, quality department verifies the quality of the material received and gives clearance in SAP through movement type 321 on quality acceptance.

6. Movement Type 551 & 552

Movement type 551 indicates scrapping of materials on account of damages. It is nothing but writing off the materials from the books. Movement 552 indicates reversal of movement 551.

7. Movement Type 601

Movement type 601 is used for dispatch of materials, nothing but on creation of sale invoice in SAP such quantity of material gets deducted from stock through movement type 601.

The above movement types are applicable and are same for almost all of the manufacturing concerns. There are certain other company specific material movements also which are not included here for our discussion.
